Cut Out Complex Objects with Affinity Photo

Part 3

Back to Part 2

Turn off the Background layer. You will now see the part we're bringing back.

Select the main cutout layer.

Hit the deselect icon.

Right-click on the main cutout layer, and select Merge Down.

The smaller cut out which we have just brought back is now merged with the main cut out. The cut out process is now complete, and we can manipulate it. But first, let's take a quick look at the final cut out.

Let's start making some adjustments to the cutout. Let's change the colour. First, select the View Tool. This stops us drawing points all over the screen!

Right click on the cut out layer, and select Group.

A group layer will be created. The cut out layer will be put inside it. The group layer will have a white triangle next to it. Click the white triangle to expand the group.

Because the cut out layer is now in a group, any adjustments we make will not affect the other layers. Select the cut out layer.

Click the adjustments icon.

Choose HSL.

On the HSL dialog, drag the Hue Shift slider (the second slider down) to the colour of your choice. In the example image, we've gone with green.

We think the green in the example is too bright. Click the Adjustments icon, and select Black & White.

You can now bring a colour in the cut out layer closer to black or closer to white. In this example we've brought the green down using the green slider.

If you would like to reduce the effect of the adjustment, you can do so by changing the Opacity on the bottom left of the dialog. In this example we have brought the opacity of the adjustment down to 51%, so that the car is still reasonably green.

If your image contains detail such as raindrops, you may wish to add some clarity to the image. Click the Filter Icon.

Select Clarity Filter.

Bring the Clarity up using the slider.

Okay, let's take a look at our final cut out image against the background. First, close the Group layer by clicking the white triangle that is next to it.

Now, show the background Layer by ticking the box next to it. And you'll see your final image!

If you would like to see your original image, simply hide the Group layer by unticking the box next to it.
